Why is Harper Avoiding the Media?

I picked up this link this morning on Twitter via @BrianMCarroll from the Nanaimo Daily News.  It shows that our totalitarian Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper is in image control but not into communicating with Canadians...at least not through the conventional media.

I am on the PMO distribution list of what Harper is doing and the activities are mere message massage and manipulation.  I can't understand why cash strapped and staff starved MSM even bother to cover these circuses of events where photos are allowed but journalists questions are not allowed or severely limited.

It is becoming more obvious that our democracy is in decline and the personal ambitions of Prime Minister Harper are pleased and promoting that demise.  Canadians have to wake up and smell the political rot - and it is not just in Ottawa.

Many of our political parties and leaders have forfeited the benefit of the doubt from citizens that they are acting in our best interests.  The uncertainty amongst citizens it there but individually they seem to be afraid of the consequences of taking back political power into the hands of the electorate and not the elites in political parties or back rooms.

Giving up on democracy is not an option.  Showing up, speaking out and insisting on accountability, integrity, honesty and transparency from those who seek our consent to govern us is the only option.  If you are better off today than 4 years ago I can understand a contentment to the status quo...but not many of us are as well off.

The fear uncertainty and doubt we are feeling about the future can best be fixed by citizens taking action.  We need to change the political power structure, who is in political power and how we select those to whom we grant political power.  If you are not content with the status quo and the infighting between left and right politics you can re-engage in a progressive approach to democracy through Reboot Alberta   Join us and start making a difference in the future of Alberta and even Canada.

I want the current system where we have good government provincially and federally, especially with Harper. Why rock the boat?

  2. The Canadian political and economic boat is sinking and Harper says he is all about the economy but in reality he is all about photo-ops and spin.

Harper's got a great list of candidates. Look at Ryan Hastman in Edmonton. He's a good wildroser who's going to clean up Linda Duncan in a hurry.

Harper is about Harper. He is, as his actions in office have continually indicated, a control freak who is about reducing the social role of government, the regulatory role of government and getting to a state that is governed by the markets. It is only by luck that the Conservatives were not able to deregulate the banks before the last economic crisis. He has not learned. The new gags on Scientists that are now in place will only get worse. This party has, at its core a NeoCon view of society with a Fundamentalist Christian (the world is only 6000+ years old) credo. Anything else is just window dressing to win votes at any cost.

Stephen Harper is above all else a policy wonk - that is where he lives, and that is what he loves. Policy is what drives a political agenda, and he was voted into office because of several policy initiatives he promised to implement, and then went ahead and did them, completing his campaign promises.

We should have the same reaction to that as we would if say Jean Chretien was voted into office, promised to scrap the GST, and then went ahead and did it. He didn't. So we can't be happy about a Liberal promise.

See the difference? Harper promises to do something and does it.

Chretien promises to do something and doesn't. Yet Chrtien is the Liberal gold standard. Promise to do something, get photo ops, be seen a lot, and don't do what you promised to do.

So if you read what the other Ministers are doing - bringing brain trusts from afar to join Universities in Canada, buying the best jets in the world to ensure safety and future high tech business, making sure infrastructure projects are completed and to spec, etc.

It's called G-O-V-E-R-N-I-N-G, and I would prefer Harper be in his office running the business of government, carrying out policy, rather than running all over the BBQ circuit and making meaningless announcements a la Chretien and that environmental do nothing Dion.

The only other guy I liked because he was busy governing and taking care of business was Paul Martin - competent, respected, intelligent, balanced budgets - a true Conservative, and he was torpedoed by the hugely less competent Chretien.

Give me Harper running a Government - all substance and no show. You want show and incompetence - go live in Obamaland
